New 'Coca-Cola' Initiative To Turn Waste Into Cash For Football

This September, Coca-Cola Great Britain will launch a new initiative, 'Talent from Trash', in partnership with the Football League to help encourage and motivate people, particularly football fans and their families, to recycle more. The unique programme will benefit football clubs and local authorities across the UK - the main goal being to increase recycling levels in communities by 4%, in return for cash prizes of up to £18,000 for local Football League clubs.

Thirteen football clubs and local authorities will be involved in the initiative, which will last for twelve weeks, until the end of November. The learnings from this initiative will inform the Company's wider plans for encouraging consumer recycling in 2008.

'Talent From Trash' is designed to:
  • Engage and motivate local communities to increase household waste recycling levels by 4% in participating areas, against the same twelve week period in 2006. All non-food household waste is included: glass, paper, cardboard, steel, aluminium and plastic. Fans and their families are encouraged to participate in the local authority kerbside collection schemes in their areas, or can take their recyclable materials to council sites and Tesco recycling centres situated in the supermarket's car parks
  • Help local football clubs achieve a maximum of £18,000 (minimum £3,400), depending on the uplift in recycling levels in their area, to be spent on youth development
  • Encourage football fans to pledge to recycle more and give them clear and straightforward information about where, how and why to recycle via www.talent-from-trash.com. Fans can enter once every day and could win a further prize from their club e.g. signed shirts. One lucky fan will also win an extra £10,000 for their club and £5,000 for themselves in return for pledging to recycle more

As a major manufacturer, 'Coca-Cola' is committed to continually improving its own environmental impact. These include initiatives to reduce the amount of packaging used, increase recycled content of packaging and recycle as much manufacturing waste as possible, as well as encouraging consumers to recycle. 'Talent from Trash' has been developed with input from WRAP, the government-funded Waste Resources & Action Programme, and local authorities, in addition to the Clubs.

Sanjay Guha, President, Coca-Cola Great Britain said: "We're committed to doing business in ways that help protect and preserve the environment - and this means improving our own manufacturing and packaging processes to reduce waste and raw materials, as well as encouraging consumers to recycle more. We hope the incentives and appeal of 'Talent from Trash' will help encourage football fans and their families to get involved in recycling for the benefit of the environment and their local football club."

Fridey Cordingley, Head of 'Recycle Now' at WRAP, which works in partnership to encourage and enable businesses and consumers to be more efficient in their use of materials and recycle more things more often, said: "Our own Recycle Now campaign is about getting people to recycle more things more often. The 'Coca-Cola' 'Talent from Trash' initiative can help towards this goal and we support it. Partnering with local authorities and encouraging communities to increase recycling for the benefit of the local football club is an inspired way to get people motivated to do their bit. Every person can make a difference. We hope everyone will get behind this innovative initiative and get into the habit of recycling."

'Coca-Cola' has been the proud sponsor of the Football League since 2004 and recently extended its sponsorship deal to run until the 2009/10 season. Fans can find out more information and pledge their support to recycle via www.talent-from-trash.com.
